Movable barre chords: E and A shapes

Master the two barre shapes that let you play any major chord: the E shape (root on string 6) and the A shape (root on string 5).

How to do it

  1. Follow the TAB: G with the E shape (barre 3), C with the A shape (barre 3), A with the E shape (barre 5) and D with the A shape (barre 5).
  2. Always locate the root: in the E shape it is on string 6, in the A shape on string 5. The chord name is the name of that note.
  3. Check that every string under the barre rings cleanly before changing position.

Variations

  • Play the same three-chord song using only E shapes, then only A shapes.
