Intermediate

Gain finger independence by playing the chromatic run in unusual orders (1-3-2-4), especially the awkward 2-3 and pinky combinations.

Tablature

How to do it

  1. On each string, play the frets in finger order 1-3-2-4 — frets 5-7-6-8 — before moving to the next string (follow the TAB).
  2. Run across all six strings with alternate picking and come back with the reversed order (4-2-3-1).
  3. Keep the idle fingers "planted" close to the strings and press just behind the fret.
  4. Once it is clean, try other orders: 1-4-2-3, 4-1-3-2, 2-4-1-3…

Variations

  • Move the pattern one position higher up the neck each time.

Tips

  • If one order feels hard, that is exactly the one worth repeating.
