Play "spread" major triads that skip strings, for a wide, crystalline sound (the open-voiced style Eric Johnson uses).

How to do it

  1. Play the shape following the TAB: root on string 5, 5th on string 3 and 3rd on string 1, leaving strings 4 and 2 silent (skip them).
  2. Mute the skipped strings with your idle fingers: the sound must be clean, just three notes.
  3. Move the same shape up the neck following the TAB: C, D, E and G major.

Tips

  • Fingerpick them (not with a pick) to make them ring like a harp; great for intros and endings.
